The 1980 World Amateur Snooker Championship, the ninth IBSF World Snooker Championship, was held in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia at the Albert Hall from 26 October to 9 November 1980. Twenty-eight players took part in four round-robin groups of seven, followed by knockout rounds to decide the champion. Cliff Wilson, the 1978 champion, had turned professional in 1979 and did not defend his title.

Jimmy White of England, aged 17 and the top seed, won the title by beating Ron Atkins of Australia 11–2 in the final. Atkins, president of the Tasmanian snooker association, had entered as a late replacement for Chris Cooper from the Isle of Man. White became the youngest World Amateur Champion, and his plan to turn professional had already been approved by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association.

The tournament’s highest break was 127, made by Eugene Hughes of Ireland against Arvind Savur in the group stage.
