Roy Freirich is an American screenwriter, novelist, and songwriter born in New York City. He studied at Beloit College (graduating in 1974) and earned a master's degree in English from the University of Michigan. Freirich began his career as a songwriter for Warner Music Group and EMI, writing lyrics performed by Aretha Franklin and Smokey Robinson, and contributing to films such as A Goofy Movie and Top Gun. He received a Grammy nomination in 1983 for Best Album Or Original Score Written For A Motion Picture Or A Television Special.

As a screenwriter, he has worked with DreamWorks, Fox Searchlight and Warner Bros. He wrote the screenplay adaptation of his novel Winged Creatures, released as a 2008 thriller starring Forest Whitaker, Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Josh Hutcherson, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Hudson, Jackie Earle Haley and Jeanne Tripplehorn. His second novel, Deprivation, was published in March 2020. Freirich has also released music, including Songs from a Social Distance (2023), co-written with and performed by Teitur Lassen.
