Ringoes is the oldest known settlement in Hunterdon County, growing around John Ringo’s Tavern on the Old York Road (now Route 179). Much of the area is part of the Ringoes Historic District, a 187-acre region that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 for its importance in agriculture, architecture, education, industry, exploration, and transportation. The district includes 134 contributing buildings.
Notable historic buildings include:
- Henry Landis House (built in 1750; Colonial Revival style)

- Washington Hotel (about 1838; Colonial Revival style)
