Repentance (2013 film)
Repentance is a 2013 American psychological horror film written and directed by Philippe Caland, with co-writers Shintaro Shimosawa and Yusuf Hassan. It stars Forest Whitaker, Anthony Mackie, Mike Epps, Nicole Ari Parker, and Sanaa Lathan. The movie was produced by CodeBlack Films and JuntoBox Films and distributed by Lionsgate. It runs 95 minutes and is in English.
The story centers on Tommy Carter, a successful therapist and spiritual advisor who has built a popular approach that blends different world religions. He soon faces trouble when he takes on a new client, Angel Sanchez, a man obsessed with the “untimely” death of his mother.
To help fund his indebted brother Ben, Carter agrees to work with Angel. During a seance, Angel’s pain becomes clear, and Carter tells him he can no longer treat him. Angel then overwhelms Carter, kidnapping and torturing him in an attempt to force a confession. Carter’s wife and brother are also taken, and a shocking truth emerges: it was the two brothers who caused Angel’s mother’s death by accident—Ben pushed her over a bridge while she was alive, after they had run her down with their car.
Angel untapes Carter, leaves him with a gun, and walks away with his daughter. A gunshot rings out, and Carter narrates that both brothers’ souls are tainted by what happened that night.
Repentance had a limited U.S. release starting February 28, 2014. In its opening weekend it grossed about $501,290 in 152 theaters, and it went on to earn roughly $1.19 million overall. The film was later released on Digital HD and Video on Demand on June 10, 2014, and on Blu-ray and DVD on June 24, 2014. Critics generally did not respond well to the film, with Rotten Tomatoes showing about 33% positive from six reviews.
