Rebecca Sealy Hospital
Rebecca Sealy Hospital was part of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas. It opened in 1866 as St. Mary’s Hospital, a private Catholic general hospital. In 1996, the Sealy & Smith Foundation bought the hospital, renamed it Rebecca Sealy Hospital, and donated it to UTMB for use as a psychiatric, outpatient surgery, and research facility. The eight-story building housed a psychiatric unit with about 20 beds. In 2008, Hurricane Ike caused severe flooding that damaged UTMB’s facilities, including Rebecca Sealy. The inpatient psychiatric unit closed, and the building was later renovated into offices and simulation labs.
