Ratyan

Ratyan is a small village in northern Syria. It’s located in Aleppo Governorate, within Azaz District and the Nubl Nahiyah (subdistrict). The village sits northwest of the city of Aleppo. Nearby places include Mayer to the northwest, Al-Zahraa and Bayanoun to the west, and Tell Jabin to the east. In 2004, Ratyan had a population of 2,216 people.

During the Syrian Civil War

- Ratyan was held by opposition forces early in the war.
- In February 2015, reports varied about who controlled the village. ARA News said government forces, with Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guards, briefly took Ratyan on February 17, then rebel forces from the Levant Front retook it that evening, with a Zenki Movement commander killed in the fighting. The Times later reported that rebels regained the village on February 19 after several days of heavy fighting, capturing about 32 government soldiers.
- In February 2016, heavy fighting occurred as part of the Northern Aleppo offensive. Al-Masdar News claimed the government recaptured Ratyan on February 5, 2016, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said half the town had been retaken by rebels that day. The Independent and The Guardian reported continued fighting on February 7, 2016.
