Rachel Ruddy
Rachel Ruddy (born c. 1988) is an Irish athlete from Dublin who plays both Ladies’ Gaelic football and camogie. She has represented Dublin at inter-county level in both sports and plays for Ballyboden St Enda’s club. She also spent time playing with the Singapore Gaelic Lions while working abroad as a physiotherapist. Ruddy is known for her fitness work and for winning All-Ireland titles with Dublin in football, as well as for her camogie achievements.
Early life and education
Ruddy is the daughter of Vivian Ruddy, a former Ballyboden Wanderers Gaelic footballer from Achill Island. Her sister Ciara Ruddy also played for the Dublin senior ladies’ football team. She studied physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin.
Playing career
Clubs
With Ballyboden St Enda’s, Ruddy won Leinster and Dublin camogie championships. She helped Ballyboden win the Dublin Ladies’ Senior Football Championship in 2010 and also played in the 2017 Dublin football final. She spent time as a camogie player with Ballyboden and also represented Trinity College Dublin (Dublin University GAA) in camogie during college. While working in Singapore, she played for the Singapore Gaelic Lions.
Inter-county
Ladies’ Gaelic football
Ruddy made her senior inter-county debut for Dublin in 2010 against Laois. She was part of the Dublin teams that won the All-Ireland Senior Ladies’ Football Championship in 2010, 2017 and 2019, and she earned All-Star recognition in 2010 and 2017. She also played in the 2014 final (runner-up) against Cork, and in 2017 and 2019 Dublin reached the finals again.
Camogie
Ruddy has also played for the Dublin senior camogie team. She was nominated for a Camogie All-Star in 2008.
Personal life
Ruddy works as a physiotherapist at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. The Dublin team visited Crumlin after finals in September 2019, a longstanding tradition for All-Ireland champions. On 19 October 2019 she married Seamus Conboy in Ravello, Italy.
