Madrigal de las Altas Torres
Madrigal de las Altas Torres is a town and municipality in Spain, in the province of Ávila in Castile and León. It covers about 106.8 square kilometers and sits at an elevation of about 809 meters, in the northern part of Ávila near Salamanca and Valladolid. The name comes from medieval times; it was once called Matrigale and Madrigal, with “de las Altas Torres” added later. It grew from a small settlement belonging to Arévalo and earned a fuero (a charter granting rights) in 1017, confirmed in 1168, linking Madrigal to the House of Trastámara in the late Middle Ages. The town was once surrounded by walls; today some sections remain, especially in the southwest. After the 1950s, many residents left the countryside. In 2020, the regional government declared the historic center a protected cultural site (conjunto histórico).
