Probability Sun

Probability Sun is a science fiction novel by Nancy Kress, published in 2001. It’s the second book in the Probability trilogy, following Probability Moon and leading to Probability Space (2002), which won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award.

The story takes place in a galaxy colonized by humans through a network of space tunnels built by a long-dead progenitor race. Humans are not ruled by a single government; instead, many governments in the Solar System and beyond work together through the Solar Alliance Defense Network to fight a powerful alien invader called the Fallers.

A military expedition travels to the planet World, where aliens live with a strange telepathy or “shared reality.” This system makes it painful for Worlders to hold strongly differing opinions. The expedition’s main goal, however, is to investigate a crashed alien artifact buried in World’s crust that could hold the key to defeating the Fallers.

The tunnels are mysterious and dangerous. They have odd rules: for example, ships can get tangled in the path if others move in the meantime, and only objects below about 100,000 tons can pass safely. The exact physics of the tunnels remains unknown, though some speculate about macro-level quantum effects. The tunnels also reveal the Fallers, an enemy race that refuses to communicate and is at war with humanity; none of its members are captured alive.

Another recurring element is how technology shapes society. Humans commonly use genetic modification (genemods) and mood-regulating drugs (neuropharms) to control biology and behavior. Genemods are done in the lab, while neuropharms are taken regularly to manage daily life and mood.

In short, Probability Sun blends space travel, alien contact, and a high-stakes war, all centered on a mysterious artifact that might change the fate of humanity. The novel received favorable reviews from critics such as Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly.
