Port of Almeria
Port of Almería is a busy ferry port in the city of Almería, Spain. It sits in the city center and mainly serves as a ferry terminal to North Africa. Typical crossings to Nador or Melilla take about six hours. This route is longer and more expensive than the Algeciras–Tangier option, but it’s more convenient for travellers heading to the Rif region or Algeria.
The port also has a marina and a regular commercial port that can handle cargo ships and cruise ships. Several shipping companies run frequent services to northern Morocco and Algeria, with multiple sailings each day. The ferry terminal area includes a large shaded car waiting area, and a 24-hour terminal with offices, a cafe, a small shop, and a call shop. Foot passengers wait inside and board via a first-floor embarkation area connected to the ships by a network of moving footbridges that reach every quay. Car loading and unloading happens without disrupting passenger embarkation. Outside there are a few restaurants and a 24-hour supermarket, plus toilets and showers.
Because the port is busy, ships use a harbor pilot who boards on arrival and leaves before departure. Ferries often need to swing around to dock properly, since ferries in Africa berth bow-first while Almería docks stern-first. A Vessel Traffic Services tower with radar monitors the harbor entrance and port area.
