Polygamy (film)
Polygamy, also released as Illegal Wives, is an American film from the 1930s. It was produced in 1936 and had its world premiere in Detroit in 1937. Ted Toddy helped with distribution, but the film did not receive approval until 1939 after lengthy talks with censors and edits. The movie was directed by Patrick Carlyle (often listed as Pat Carlyle). Some scenes were cut by censors; one censor said they disliked the picture but could not reject it after the cuts. The Motion Picture Association of America corresponded with censors about the film. It was produced by Unusual Pictures. J. D. Kendis bought the rights and released it under the title Illegal Wives. IMDb notes that director Pat Carlyle was born April 23, 1900 in Los Angeles as Raymond Carlyle Plotts and worked as an actor, producer, writer, and director. Frank Pharr was married to Symona Boniface, an actress with the Three Stooges. Joseph Breen was involved in censoring correspondence.
