Political Bureau of the Central Committee of FRELIMO
Political Bureau of the Central Committee of FRELIMO (the Politburo) was the leadership body of the FRELIMO party. It had 10 seats and was elected by and responsible to the FRELIMO Central Committee. It met at the People’s Assembly in Maputo. The Politburo briefly served as Mozambique’s head of state from 19 October to 6 November 1986 after President Samora Machel died in a plane crash, and Joaquim Chissano was elected to succeed him. The Politburo was reformed in 1989 at FRELIMO’s 5th Congress.
