Poe, Indiana
Poe is an unincorporated community in Marion Township, Allen County, Indiana, United States. It sits on about two city blocks and is often linked with nearby Hoagland. The town was first named Williamsport after landowner William Essig, but the name was changed because postal officials wouldn’t accept it since another Williamsport existed in Indiana. Poe has a small downtown, which in the mid-1990s had less activity than in the past. The fire department building was moved to land donated in the 1960s. Poe had a post office from 1856 to 1917; today mail is served by the Fort Wayne post office. In 1956 the Poe Southwestern Telephone Association sold one share of stock for $25. The area is served by East Allen County Schools, including Heritage Elementary School and Heritage Junior/Senior High School. Poe and Hoagland share Hope United Methodist Church, located just outside Hoagland. Two separate churches—Poe Williamsport United Methodist Church and Hoagland United Methodist Church—merged in 1995 to form Hope. The old Poe church was planned to be converted to a residence. Poe Days is an annual festival to raise money for the fire department.
