Peter Smithwick
Peter Smithwick (15 February 1937 – 8 March 2022) was an Irish judge who chaired the Smithwick Tribunal, a public inquiry into the killings of two Royal Ulster Constabulary officers, Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Robert Buchanan.
Before leading the tribunal in 2005, he served as President of the District Court for 17 years.
Smithwick was the ninth generation of his family involved with Smithwick's, the Kilkenny beer brewed by his family firm. He was well-liked and respected, and he was a Freeman of Kilkenny. He grew up at Kilcreene Lodge and studied at Castleknock College and University College Dublin. His family were part of the landed gentry of County Kilkenny, Leinster, Ireland.
He died on 8 March 2022, aged 85.
