He grew up in Augsburg and began as a boy soloist with the Regensburger Domspatzen. He studied voice in Munich and won prizes at competitions in Munich, Geneva, and Verviers. Lika sang at the Stadttheater Augsburg from 1972 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1981, and he performed with Bayerische Kammeroper in Veitshöchheim, which presents Baroque operas in a historically informed style. He became famous for leading roles in Mendelssohn’s Elias and Paulus, Bruch’s Moses, and Haydn’s Die Schöpfung and Die Jahreszeiten. He has worked with renowned conductors such as Kurt Masur, John Eliot Gardiner, and Philippe Herreweghe, and with major orchestras including the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, and Israel Philharmonic. Lika has toured Europe, Asia, and the United States, and appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1986 (church concert) and 1989 (Orff’s Antigonae as a messenger). In 1991 he sang the bass solo in Mozart’s Requiem in Brussels. He also performs Lieder, recording Schubert songs with Wolfgang Sawallisch. He is married and has six sons—two from his first marriage and four from his second, including Benedikt Lika.
