Into the Darkness (novel)
Into the Darkness is a 1999 fantasy novel by American author Harry Turtledove. It is the first book in the Darkness series. The story is set on the fantasy world of Derlavai, a generation after the Six Years War, and follows how several nations go to war with Algarve. The Algarvians use other nations’ reluctance to fight to their advantage, splitting Forthweg with Unkerlant and then overrunning Valmiera, Jelgava, and Sibiu, while Unkerlant takes part of Zuwayza. Lagoas joins the war after Sibiu falls. The book ends with the Algarvians getting the drop on Unkerlant in Forthweg, who had planned to attack first. Kuusamo tries but fails to seize Obuda from Gyongyos. Yanina gains control of the Land of the Ice People. It is followed by Darkness Descending.
