Premise
The show follows a team led by Harold Finch, a reclusive programmer who created a government computer program called the Machine. The Machine predicts crimes by mining all sources of information and identifies both victims and perpetrators of premeditated crimes. The government considers many predictions “irrelevant,” so Finch has the Machine delete those numbers each night and secretly alerts himself to the relevant ones to stop violent acts.
Season arc and storylines

- Carter is killed in the season’s pivotal episodes “The Crossing” (the HR arc) to propel the narrative and highlight the show’s moral stakes.
- The late season reveals the existence of Samaritan’s counterpart and the larger threat it poses. The show also deepens relationships within the team, including tensions with Samaritan’s looming menace.
- Root and Shaw work to ensure Samaritan can’t be easily stopped, and eventually modify it so the team’s newly created identities aren’t flagged as suspicious.
- The Machine’s sentience becomes fully revealed as it communicates with and directs the team more proactively.
