Paul Klein (musician)
Paul Jason Klein (born April 30, 1988) is an American musician, former model, and record producer. He is the lead singer of LANY, a pop rock band known for its emotional lyrics and stylish visuals. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Klein grew up in a Christian family and started classical piano at age five, training for 13 years. He studied at Belmont University in Nashville, where he met Jake Goss and Les Priest. The three formed LANY in 2014 after Klein moved to Los Angeles to pursue music.
LANY started by sharing music on SoundCloud and built a fanbase through live shows in California. They signed with Polydor and Interscope and have released six studio albums: LANY (2017), Malibu Nights (2018), Mama’s Boy (2020), Gg bb xx (2021), A Beautiful Blur (2023) on Sunset Records, and Soft (2025). Notable singles include ILYSB, Super Far, Malibu Nights, and collaborations like Okay with Julia Michaels (2019) and Mean It with Lauv (2019).
Klein is also LANY’s creative director, overseeing merchandise, album artwork, and the band’s overall visual style. His songs often explore relationships, heartbreak, and self-discovery, delivered in a soft, emotive voice. He cites influences such as Coldplay, John Mayer, and Imogen Heap, and has called Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift his dream collaborators; he admires Chris Martin of Coldplay.
In fashion, Klein blends streetwear with vintage pieces and has worked with Elwood Clothing. He has been a muse for Marni and attended Milan Fashion Week in 2021. He emphasizes honesty and direct fan engagement, often managing the band's social media himself.
On a personal note, Klein dated Dua Lipa from 2017 to 2018, a relationship that inspired much of Malibu Nights. In 2024, he was in a Vespa accident in Los Angeles, suffering multiple injuries but recovering.
