Papakura
Papakura is a suburb in South Auckland, New Zealand. It sits on the shores of the Pahurehure Inlet, about 32 kilometres south of Auckland’s city centre. It is governed by Auckland Council and is part of the Manurewa-Papakura ward and the Papakura Local Board.
Papakura covers about 12.9 square kilometres and had around 37,700 residents in 2025. The name in Māori is Papakura, usually translated as “Red Earth” or “Red Flats,” though some historians offer the meaning “Flat of the Moa.”
Long before Europeans arrived, Tāmaki Māori lived in the area from the 13th or 14th centuries, using the Hunua Ranges and Manukau Harbour for food. A fortified site was built at Pukekiwiriki, and gardens developed nearby. Europeans began settling in Papakura in the mid-1800s. The town grew with the construction of the Great South Road and served as a military outpost during the Waikato War. In the late 19th century it was known for kauri gum digging, logging and later dairy farming. Papakura became a borough in 1938, and later a city in 1975 before joining the wider Auckland urban area in 2010.
Geographically, Papakura sits near the Pahurehure Inlet, with Takanini to the north, Drury to the south and Karaka to the west. To the east lies Pukekiwiriki, a volcanic hill, and the Hunua Ranges lie further east.
Transport is a key part of Papakura. The area sits on State Highway 1 and the North Island Main Trunk railway. The Auckland Southern Motorway bypassed the old Great South Road in the 1960s, and the Southern Path, a walking and cycling route, opened in 2021. Papakura railway station is a busy stop on the Southern Line, with trains to Auckland and beyond. The Te Huia regional train service operated here from 2021 to 2025 until Pukekohe was electrified.
Papakura has a range of services and facilities, including a large police station, a district court, a WINZ office, a library and a theatre, plus the Papakura Museum (opened in 1972). The town offers many sports facilities, such as an outdoor and indoor pool, an athletics track, a stadium, and venues for rugby, netball, cricket, golf, tennis and more. Local sports clubs include Papakura City FC (soccer), Papakura RFC (rugby), Papakura Sea Eagles (rugby league) and Papakura Cricket Club. The area is represented in higher-level sport by the Counties Manukau Steelers in rugby and Northern Districts in cricket.
Education in Papakura includes several primary and secondary schools. Papakura High School (years 9–13) opened in 1954; Papakura Intermediate (years 7–8) opened in 1962; other schools include Papakura Normal School, Edmund Hillary School, Papakura Central School, Kelvin Road School and Cosgrove School.
