PRIM2

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

PRIM2 is the gene that encodes the large subunit of DNA primase, known as the p58 protein. This subunit teams up with the small subunit PRIM1 to form the DNA primase enzyme, which works with DNA polymerase alpha to lay down short RNA primers on the lagging strand during DNA replication. The primase-Pol alpha complex, including PRIM2, initiates DNA synthesis and helps ensure accurate genome replication and stability. In humans, PRIM2 is located on chromosome 6p11.2, and there are orthologs in many species (e.g., the mouse PRIM2 on chromosome 1). The gene is also called p58 or primase (DNA) subunit 2.
