Our Girl
Our Girl is a British military drama that aired on BBC One from 2013 to 2020. It was created by Tony Grounds and began with a 90-minute pilot starring Lacey Turner as Molly Dawes, a young woman who joins the British Army to turn her life around. After the pilot, a full series followed in 2014 with Turner returning as Molly. Turner left after the first series and Michelle Keegan joined the show as Georgie Lane, a skilled army medic who became the new lead.
The series ran four seasons with a total of 28 episodes. Much of the filming happened in South Africa, which stood in for Afghanistan in the first and fourth series, and the show also used locations in Nepal, Kenya, Belize, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Malaysia to depict different missions and disasters. The stories focus on soldiers and medics dealing with training, danger, and life away from home.
In series 1, Molly’s journey from training to active service in Afghanistan is explored. Series 2 shifts the spotlight to Georgie and follows a humanitarian mission in a Kenyan refugee camp. Series 3 is split into two parts, with scenes filmed in Nepal for Part 1 and in Nigeria, Belize, and Bangladesh for Part 2, introducing new characters like Maisie Richards. Series 4 continues with Georgie as the lead and adds several new recruits. The show ends after this final run, with Keegan leaving the role and the BBC confirming there would be no fifth series.
Overall, the show received mixed reviews. It was praised for its action, production, and performances—especially in the early seasons—but some critics felt the later seasons glamorized military life and suffered from an inconsistent tone.
