Organisation of Bulgarian Scouts
The Organisation of Bulgarian Scouts is Bulgaria’s main national Scouting group. It welcomes both boys and girls and is run by volunteers.
A brief history: Scouting began in Bulgaria in the 1920s with the Organization of Bulgarian Young Scouts (OBMR). OBMR joined the World Bureau of Boy Scouts in 1924. In 1940, the group dissolved under wartime pressure, and after World War II Scouting was banned during the communist era. Scouting returned in 1989. The current national body, Organisation of Bulgarian Scouts, was founded in 1995 and joined the World Organization of the Scout Movement on January 17, 1999 as the 151st member, with a formal welcome at the World Scout Conference in South Africa on July 25, 1999.
Today: In 2011 there were about 2,000 members in 57 groups. By 2023 the organization had around 373 members in 19 groups across 12 towns. Sea Scouts operate in Silistra on the Danube and along the Black Sea.
Activities: Bulgarian Scouts work on community development projects, including reforestation and supporting the Bulgarian Red Cross. They hold an annual national jamboree. The organization is open to both genders and is volunteer-run.
Terms and symbols: The single Scout is called Скаут. Scouts—Be Prepared; Sea Scouts—Love the Sea. The membership badge features the Cyrillic letters О-Б-С.
