Ordinary People is a pop-rock song by English singer-songwriter Steve Harley. It was released as a non-album single on 25 September 2015 by Comeuppance and was written by Harley, Jim Cregan and Robert Hart, with Harley also producing. The track began as a Cregan/Hart demo given to Harley in 2010, but he revived and expanded it in 2014, describing it as a work in progress during late 2014 live shows. It was first performed publicly by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel in December 2014 (York Barbican) and February 2015 (Hull City Hall). In June 2015 Harley recorded the song at Shrubbery Studio in Suffolk with his touring band; bass guitarist Marty Prior made his Steve Harley recording debut on the track. The recording was engineered by Richard Clark and mixed by Matt Butler, with a remix prepared for release. The single, which has a Beatles-like feel and expresses a message for ordinary people, was pre-released digitally on 5 September 2015 and released widely on 25 September; a physical release was limited to 150 promo copies for radio. Artwork features a close-up photo of Harley by Mike Callow, and the song received early airplay on BBC Radio Scotland, Oslo Radio and BBC Radio 2 before being performed on the 2015 UK tour; a live video was posted to YouTube on 7 November 2015.
