Ohio State Route 424
Ohio State Route 424 was a 25.8-mile east–west state highway in northwest Ohio, running along the northern bank of the Maumee River from Defiance to Napoleon. It used to be the old path of US 24 before the highway was moved to a nearby bypass.
The route began at US 24 in Defiance (about 3 miles west of downtown) and followed Baltimore Street, Holgate Avenue, and West Third Avenue, then joined Clinton Avenue and crossed the Maumee River on a bridge shared with SR 111. It stayed along the river’s edge through Defiance, into Richland Township, and into Henry County, passing through Florida before reaching Napoleon (where it was known as Riverview Avenue). In Napoleon, it met SR 108 near the end of SR 110, then continued northeast toward Liberty Township, ending in a dead end near US 6/US 24. A short connector, SR 424-C, linked SR 424 with westbound US 6/US 24.
SR 424 was created in 1964 on the old US 24 route through Defiance and was extended along the river when US 24 was moved to a bypass in 1969. As US 24 was upgraded toward freeway standards, SR 424 was gradually turned over to local control. The western end was reduced to the Defiance/Henry County line in 2008, and the eastern end was transferred on December 1, 2012. Since then, the former SR 424 roads have been redesignated as County Road 424 and related township routes. The old western terminus area is now exit 22 on the US 24 freeway, and SR 424-C became a local township road.
