José María Maguregui
José María Maguregui Ibarguchi (16 March 1934 – 30 December 2013) was a Spanish football midfielder and later a coach. Born in Ugao-Miraballes, Biscay, he began his playing career with Athletic Bilbao, debuting in 1952. He helped Athletic win the 1956 La Liga title and three Copa del Rey trophies in four years, making 198 league appearances and scoring 36 goals for the club, with a loan spell at Getxo early in his career. He also played for Sevilla, Español and Recreativo before retiring as a player in 1965, totaling 239 league appearances and 42 goals. Internationally, Maguregui earned seven caps for Spain and scored once on his debut in 1955.
As a coach, Maguregui led many clubs. He started with Miravalles and Sestao, then guided Racing Santander to top‑flight promotions and long service as its manager. He also promoted RC Celta de Vigo in 1978 and AD Almería in 1979. His other spells included Español, a return to Racing Santander, Celta, Atlético Madrid, Murcia, and a final period with Celta in 1990–1991. He is remembered as Racing Santander’s longest‑serving manager, with the most games in charge. Maguregui died in Bilbao in 2013 after a long illness, aged 79; his last public appearance was the opening of Athletic Bilbao’s new San Mamés stadium in June 2013.
