Noel Lynch
Noel Lynch (20 January 1947 – 3 August 2021) was an Irish-born politician who lived in London and belonged to the Green Party of England and Wales. He served on the London Assembly from May 2003 to June 2004, taking the seat of Victor Anderson when he resigned. After the 2004 election, the Green Party’s top-up seat was not retained, and Lynch left the Assembly, with Darren Johnson and Jenny Jones continuing as Green Assembly Members.
Lynch grew up in Kilmallock, County Limerick, and moved to London in 1986. He was active in Finchley politics, helping found The Archer, a community newspaper, and the East Finchley Traders Association. He first entered electoral politics in Ireland, running as an Independent in the 1969 Limerick West by-election. In London, he became a leading Green Party figure, serving as Co-ordinator of the London Federation of Green Parties and as Co-Convenor of the Green Party Trade Union Group. He also founded London Green News and was involved in several Green Party campaigns and groups, including the London-Irish Green Group and the London Green Party Animal Rights Group; Time Out once described his London shop as “the most interesting in London.”
As an Assembly Member, Lynch sat on the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, the Metropolitan Police Authority, and several committees, including Planning and Spatial Development, Health, and the Standards Committee, which he chaired. He focused on health, homelessness, GM crops, fluoride, the elderly, disability issues, and animal rights. He helped save Cricklewood Homeless Centre and supported the Patients Forum of the London Ambulance Service, and he organized conferences on GM crops and non-animal medical research. He wrote four policy papers and asked 157 questions of the Mayor on a wide range of topics.
He stood for the Green Party in various elections, including the Brent East by-election in 2003 (3.1% of the vote) and the Finchley and Golders Green constituency in the 2005 General Election (2.6%). He was listed on the Green Party’s top-up lists for the London Assembly elections in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2016, but the party did not win a third top-up seat in those years. Lynch was married to Diane Burstein Lynch and had a daughter, Michelle. He lived in North Finchley.
A tribute to Lynch was posted by City Hall after his death in 2021.
