Night Corridor
Night Corridor is a 2003 Hong Kong gothic drama directed by Julian Lee. It’s based on Lee’s own Night Corridor story that appeared in Ming Pao, and it stars Daniel Wu, Coco Chiang, and Kara Wai. The 73-minute film blends noir, fantasy, and horror in a moody, dreamlike style.
The story follows Yuan Sen, an introverted artist studying photography in the UK. He returns to Hong Kong after a dream about his younger brother Ah Hongtuo, who died in a mysterious, claw-shaped attack. Determined to uncover the truth, Yuan Sen uncovers a tangled web of memory and fear. His mother has remarried and grown unstable, and a forbidden book left by his brother points to painful family secrets, including past abuse by a male principal and complicated feelings around Shi Yunsheng, Yuan Sen’s former lover.
As Yuan Sen digs deeper, he encounters more temptations: Shi Yunsheng has become a pop singer, and his brother’s girlfriend Xiu Bing tries to lure him. The investigation seems to summon a dark, almost demonic force, pulling Yuan Sen toward danger and madness.
The film is known for its heavy atmosphere and exploration of repressed desire, homosexuality, and trauma. Critics have described it as a cult-style gothic tale; Variety called it a “fusion cuisine” of influences, while EasternKicks praised its cult vibe. Night Corridor was selected for the Hong Kong International Film Festival. This was Julian Lee’s second and last film; he passed away in 2014.
