Nepenthes truncata

Nepenthes truncata is a tropical pitcher plant native to the Philippines. It grows on the islands of Dinagat, Leyte, and Mindanao, from sea level up to about 1,500 meters in elevation. The plant has heart-shaped, truncate leaves and very large pitchers that can reach up to 40 cm in height. It is endangered in the wild.

The name truncata comes from Latin and means "ending abruptly," a reference to the leaf shape.

A plant called Nepenthes robcantleyi was at one time thought to be a dark highland form of this species.

There is a famous indoor photo from 2006 taken at the Botanical Gardens in Lyon showing a N. truncata with a mouse inside one of its pitchers.

In the wild, some Nepenthes species, such as N. rajah and N. rafflesiana, have been observed catching small mammals. It is possible for N. truncata to trap mice, but their bones may not be fully digested.
