Munif Mohammed Abou Rish was a Palestinian journalist. In the mid-1970s he was alleged to have planned to assassinate Bob Hawke, who was then the federal president of the Australian Labor Party and would later become prime minister. ASIO released files in 2007 stating that Abou Rish entered Australia on a fake passport provided to the Palestinian group PFLP by Palestinians living in Australia. He stayed about three weeks and planned to return in 1975 to target Hawke, the Israeli ambassador to Australia, and several prominent Jewish-Australian figures. Ali Kazak, a former Palestinian ambassador to Australia and the South Pacific, said in an interview that the passports were not fake and that the PFLP never intended to assassinate Hawke.
