Mohan Munasinghe

Mohan Munasinghe is a Sri Lankan physicist, engineer and economist who works on energy, water resources, sustainable development and climate change. He is a 2021 Blue Planet Prize laureate and served as Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. He founded the Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND) and has been an honorary senior advisor to the Sri Lankan government since 1980.

Born in Colombo, Munasinghe studied at Royal College and earned degrees from Cambridge University, MIT, McGill University and Concordia University. His degrees include a BA (Hons) in Engineering from Cambridge (1967), an MA from Cambridge, an SM and a Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering from MIT (1970), a PhD in Solid State Physics from McGill (1973), and an MA in Development Economics from Concordia (1975). He holds several honorary doctorates.

From 1982 to 1987 he was Senior Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka, helping shape the national energy and computer policies. He founded CINTEC and served on various boards, including the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association and the Arthur C. Clarke Centre for Modern Technology.

Internationally, Munasinghe has worked with the World Bank, the United Nations University, and universities and institutes around the world. He has published more than 120 books and 400 journal articles and is known for the Sustainomics framework, which aims to make development more sustainable. He also proposed the Millennium Consumption Goals at the United Nations and has held several visiting and professorial roles.
