Mikael Jansson is a Swedish fashion and portrait photographer. He is known for his stylish editorials in major magazines and for campaigns for top fashion, luxury, and beauty brands. He has been active since the late 1970s and has created work that has been widely published and shown around the world.
Early life and education
Mikael Jansson was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He became interested in photography as a teenager, photographing touring musicians in Stockholm. He learned the basics of photography by assisting photographer Carl Johan Ronn, gaining hands-on experience in the studio.
Career
In the mid-1980s, Jansson moved to New York City to work in the studio of famed photographer Richard Avedon. He assisted Avedon for two years, including work in the darkroom for the exhibition In the American West (1985). Avedon’s influence is seen in Jansson’s emphasis on clarity, character, and capturing decisive moments.
Jansson gained international attention in 1998 with an eighty-two-page portfolio in Dutch magazine that featured nude portraits with fashion credits, presented in a Warhol-inspired format. Since then, his editorial work has appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Interview, Vogue Paris, Vogue Italia, British Vogue, W, Visionaire, and The New York Times, as well as Harper’s Bazaar, Love, Dazed & Confused, and WSJ Magazine. He has also shot many advertising campaigns for luxury and fashion brands, including Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Armani, Calvin Klein, Dior, Chloé, Ferragamo, Burberry, Jil Sander, Gucci, and Tiffany & Co., among others. He has also shot fragrance campaigns for several brands.
In addition to fashion work, Jansson is recognized for his portraiture, with notable work featuring Iggy Pop.

Over more than four decades, Jansson has developed a distinctive style marked by precise composition, direct presence, and a balance of intimacy and restraint. His work continues to influence contemporary fashion and portrait photography.
