Mary Walsh: Open Book
Mary Walsh: Open Book was a Canadian weekly talk show and book club on CBC Television. It aired from 2002 to 2005, lasting three seasons with 64 episodes. Each 30-minute episode featured Mary Walsh hosting a discussion of a single book, with a panel of celebrities and other guests. The show covered both Canadian and international books, fiction and non-fiction, and aired Sundays at 11 p.m., drawing strong ratings for a late-night time slot. It was produced in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was in English. Guests included Megan Follows, Greg Malone, Paul Gross, Mark McKinney, Janice Stein, Jerome Kennedy, Susan Musgrave, Evelyn Lau, Jann Arden, Pamela Wallin, and Jan Wong. Michael Donovan created Open Book. The program was spoofed on Royal Canadian Air Farce as “Open Book with Marg the Princess Warrior,” with Roger Abbott playing Walsh’s Marg Delahunty persona from This Hour Has 22 Minutes; the spoof featured Marg ranting about books and drifting into politics, often driving away guests (including riffs on Margaret Atwood).
