Marie-Claude Chappuis is a Swiss mezzo-soprano known for baroque opera and sacred music. She was born in Fribourg and grew up in La Brillaz in a family of singers; her mother sang in choirs. She studied at the Fribourg Conservatory and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where she won a prize for virtuosity. After a stint with Innsbruck Opera, she has performed on international stages since 2003, especially in Europe and Asia, working with conductors such as Roger Norrington, Riccardo Chailly and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Notable roles include Idamante in Idomeneo and Dido in Dido and Aeneas. She made her La Scala debut in 2017 and joined Theater an der Wien in 2018 as Hedwige in William Tell. Chappuis founded the Lieder Festival in Fribourg in 2001 and has released albums such as Sous l’empire d’Amour (2017) and Au cœur des Alpes (2018). With René Jacobs she recorded La clemenza di Tito and other works, including Telemann’s Brockes-Passion and Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Her wide repertoire spans classical and romantic opera, Lieder, sacred music and French Baroque opera.
