Marcus Rojas
Marcus Rojas is an American tubist from New York City. He grew up in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and was inspired by Latin music and his musician uncles. He started on trombone in elementary school and switched to tuba in junior high. At age 15 he began lessons with tubist Samuel Pilafian. He studied at the High School of Music & Art in New York and then at the New England Conservatory.
After graduation, Rojas returned to New York and built a varied career. He played with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Henry Threadgill's Very Very Circus, and Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy. He has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the New York City Ballet. In 1989 he formed the trio Spanish Fly with Steven Bernstein and David Tronzo. He has also worked with John Zorn, the American Symphony Orchestra, Foetus, Sly & Robbie, Sting, and They Might Be Giants. Rojas has taught at New York University, SUNY Purchase, and Brooklyn College.
