1990 FIFA World Cup qualification (OFC) - Short version

Dates: 11 December 1988 – 30 October 1989
Teams: Five teams (Australia, New Zealand and Fiji from OFC; Israel and Chinese Taipei as invited non-OFC teams)
Format: The OFC had 0.5 places in the World Cup. There were two rounds of play.

Round 1: Israel received a bye to Round 2. The other four teams were paired in home-and-away knockout ties. The aggregate winners advanced to Round 2. The results: New Zealand won 8–1 on aggregate, and Australia won 5–2 on aggregate, so both moved to Round 2.

Round 2: The three remaining teams (New Zealand, Australia, Fiji) played a round-robin group at home and away. The group winner advanced to a playoff against the CONMEBOL group winner with the weakest record.

Playoff: The OFC winner faced the CONMEBOL team in a home-and-away playoff for a spot in the World Cup. The winner qualified for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
