Lufia
Lufia, known in Japan as Estpolis Denki, is a long-running series of role-playing games. Most games are traditional 2D RPGs that mix puzzle solving, monster collecting, and action-adventure touches. The series was mainly developed by Neverland Co., Ltd., with The Ruins of Lore made by Atelier Double. In Japan, Taito published the early titles, and Square Enix later published Curse of the Sinistrals; in North America, publishers have included Natsume Inc. and Atlus USA.
The story spans two centuries. It starts with the defeat of the Sinistrals, powerful evil beings, in Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (a prequel to the first game). The events of Lufia II lead into Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, and the world’s struggle against the Sinistrals continues through several generations, with descendants like Wain carrying the fight in later games.
The series has six main entries. The first game, Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, appeared on the Super Nintendo in 1993. Lufia II is a prequel to that game. Other titles include Lufia: The Legend Returns on Game Boy Color, Lufia: The Ruins of Lore on Game Boy Advance, and Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals for the Nintendo DS (released in 2010). There were also planned games that were canceled or evolved into other projects, such as Lufia: Ruins Chaser (renamed Lufia: The Legend Returns) and Beginning of a Legend.
Overall, Lufia combines classic turn-based battles with exploration, puzzles, and character collection, telling a sweeping tale of the Sinistrals across many generations.
