Lord Stanley (restaurant)
Lord Stanley was a restaurant in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood, known for European and later French-inspired cuisine. It opened on June 11, 2015, by Rupert and Carrie Blease, a married couple of chefs, and could seat about 52 guests (40 in the main dining room). The space, designed by Boor Bridges Architecture and Upcycle Builders, uses steel and concrete with floor-to-ceiling windows for a modern, minimalist look.
The restaurant earned a Michelin star in October 2015 and kept it through 2021. In 2016, Bon Appétit named it the third-best new restaurant of that year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bleases offered takeout meals and wine and partnered on a take-out concept called Lord Jiu’s.
In September 2021, Lord Stanley closed and reopened as Turntable at Lord Stanley, hosting visiting and up-and-coming chefs for a few months. In October 2023 the restaurant reopened with Nathan Matkowsky as chef. The menu shifted to French cuisine with Asian touches and was described as a modern bistro; critics praised inventive uses of vegetables.
In March 2025, Matkowsky announced he was resigning to relocate to the East Coast, and Lord Stanley announced it would close permanently on May 31, 2025. The restaurant’s tasting and à la carte menus included gratuities in the price, following a European model.
