London Lamar
London Lamar (born December 29, 1990) is an American Democratic politician from Memphis, Tennessee. She serves in the Tennessee Senate representing District 33, a position she has held since March 2022 after being appointed by the Shelby County Commission and sworn in on March 8, 2022. She previously represented District 91 in the Tennessee House from 2018 to 2022, and she was the youngest state representative in Tennessee at that time.
Education: Lamar earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, in 2013, with minors in Sociology and Intercultural Studies.
Leadership and memberships: She is the Senate Democratic Caucus Chairwoman and works to elect Democrats to the state senate. Lamar is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women (NOBEL Women), and the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. She has also served as president of Tennessee Young Democrats.
Electoral history: In 2018, she won the Democratic primary against Doris DeBerry-Bradshaw and Juliette Eskridge and faced no opposition in the general election.
Legislative work: Lamar has sponsored 16 bills, co-sponsored 48, and co-sponsored 65 resolutions. Her focus areas include education, families, and communities. She serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Finance, Ways and Means Committee (and previously served on the Energy, Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee). In the Tennessee House, she was part of the Local Government Committee, the Cities & Counties Subcommittee, the Transportation Committee, and the Safety & Funding Subcommittee.
