Islamic educational institutions: a simple overview

These institutions share an Islamic identity or charter and fall into several groups:

- Pre-colonial religious schools that are still operating today, often called madrasas (meaning "school" or "place where lessons are given").

- Madrasas founded during the colonial era.

- Religious institutions (madrasas) founded after colonial rule ended in their countries.

- In India, colonial-era institutions that are not religious seminaries; most are universities with broad education for Muslim communities.

- Since independence, some institutions with Islamic identity are not strictly religious; they focus on sciences and arts connected to Islamic culture and history.
