Big Brother is an American reality TV show based on a Dutch series created by John de Mol Jr. It began on July 5, 2000. A group of contestants, called HouseGuests, live in a special house with cameras all around, cut off from the outside world and with little contact with it. In the first season, HouseGuests nominated two peers; the two with the most nominations faced banishment, and the public voted on who to banish. When three HouseGuests remained, the public chose the winner. Although the first season started strong, opinions about the show grew more negative over time.

Because of this, the show changed after the first season to a more competition-based format starting with season 2. HouseGuests compete in challenges to win power and safety, then vote to evict one of their own until only two remain. In the finale, former HouseGuests vote for the winner, with the person receiving the most votes winning the grand prize. The show continued with many seasons through the 2000s.
