Historically, Liboi was the site of a World War II battle on 6 September 1940 between Allied forces under British command and Italian troops; the Italians won that engagement, which was the first war action involving South African troops. In the early 1990s, during the Somali Civil War, Liboi hosted a large refugee camp, and by 1992 about 50,000 Somalis were living near Liboi.
