Lawrence Township, Mercer County, New Jersey
Lawrence Township is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey. It sits at the crossroads between the Delaware Valley and the Raritan Valley and is an outer-ring suburb of New York City, while also bordering the Philadelphia metro area. The township includes the community of Lawrenceville and is home to several colleges and large employers. The population was 33,077 in 2020.
History in brief
The area was first formed as Maidenhead Township in 1697. It was renamed Lawrence Township in 1816 in honor of Captain James Lawrence, a War of 1812 naval hero. The township joined Mercer County in 1838. A notable weather event occurred in 2003 when an EF1 tornado caused damage but no fatalities. Lawrence Township has a long history with historic buildings and a district that preserves the Lawrenceville community.
