Ladysmith, New South Wales
Ladysmith is a small village in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, about 19 kilometres east of Wagga Wagga. It has a population of 215 people (2021) and the postcode 2652. The town is part of the City of Wagga Wagga local government area.
History: The district used to be called Alfredtown, but it was renamed Ladysmith in honour of Sarah Ann Smith and her family for their work in the community. The post office opened on 20 November 1899. Ladysmith was part of the Shire of Kyeamba until 1981, when the shire merged into the City of Wagga Wagga.
Transport: A disused railway line from Wagga Wagga to Tumbarumba runs through Ladysmith. The Ladysmith railway station is a heritage site cared for by the Ladysmith Tourist Railway. After a long break due to insurance difficulties, volunteers began operating rail trike rides on a short section of the line.
Local services: The town had a store and post office agency, which closed on 31 March 2023.
Notes: The name Ladysmith also refers to a town in South Africa that was the site of Boer War battles.
