Lace school

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Lace schools were common in Great Britain and Ireland from the 17th to the 19th century and taught lace-making. They were often held in the living rooms of small cottages and were crowded, poorly lit, and unsanitary. Children, usually six or seven years old, worked long hours, sitting with their pillows, until they could make lace that could be sold. Some children learned basic reading, but there was little other schooling.
