Labour Rate

The Labour Rate was a system of outdoor relief in England from 1832 to 1834. Under it, workers were paid a fixed wage. If employers paid less than this rate, the shortfall had to be made up by the parish’s poor relief. The system was authorised by the Agricultural Labourers Act 1832 and was used in about one in five parishes before being replaced by the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834.
