Klosterfrau Melissengeist
Klosterfrau Melissengeist, also called Klostermelissen or Melissengeist, is a German herbal alcoholic remedy made by Klosterfrau Healthcare Group. It is based on lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and includes the essential oils of 13 medicinal plants, such as gentian, cardamom, cinnamon, and ginger, all in a 79% alcohol solution.
Originating in the 1800s in Cologne, it was created by nun Maria Clementine Martin in her shop near Cologne Cathedral and marketed as a Carmelite water. Over time the Klosterfrau company grew and expanded its products worldwide.
Today, Melissengeist is registered in Germany as a traditional drug. It is traditionally used for a range of minor complaints and to support general wellbeing, including nervous symptoms, trouble sleeping, colds, and digestive discomfort. It is also used externally to help with skin circulation and muscle tension, though these uses are based on experience rather than proven in scientific studies.
Usage and safety: The daily dose should not exceed 25 ml. It is intended for adults 18 years and older and should not be used during pregnancy, in alcoholism, or with liver disease. The Klosterfrau group sells many other health and cosmetic products as well.
