Kentucky Rain is a song by Elvis Presley released on January 29, 1970. It was written by Eddie Rabbitt and Dick Heard and recorded on February 19, 1969, at American Sound Studio in Memphis. The track was produced by Felton Jarvis and Chips Moman. Musicians included Ronnie Milsap on piano, along with Bobby Wood on piano, Bobby Emmons on organ, Reggie Young on guitar, Tommy Cogbill on bass, and Gene Chrisman on drums. The song is 3 minutes and 20 seconds long, and the B-side of the single was "My Little Friend."
The lyrics describe a man searching for a woman who left him, as he travels through rural Kentucky in heavy rain.
Kentucky Rain reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #10 on Cash Box. It also charted at #6 in Canada, #21 in the United Kingdom, and #7 in Australia. The single was certified Gold by the RIAA for selling over a million copies.
The song first appeared on the August 1970 compilation Worldwide 50 Gold Award Hits Vol. 1. It later appeared on the 2000 re-release of From Elvis in Memphis. Elvis performed it during his February 1970 Las Vegas engagement, introducing it as a new song. Live versions are included on the box sets Elvis Aron Presley and Live in Las Vegas. The track also appears on the 2016 CD Elvis with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: The Wonder of You. The song was published by Elvis Presley Music, Inc. and S-P-R Music Corporation.
