The town has about 10,000 residents (as of 2010) and is one of the important places within the Dagbon area, where the Dagomba people live. The local leadership includes a powerful traditional chief who oversees a large area with many sub-chiefs.
Karaga has electricity and running water. The town relies on several dams and many boreholes to provide water for its people.
There is a hospital and a clinic in Karaga, along with numerous pharmacies scattered around town to meet basic health needs.
The community supports peaceful activities like sports, cultural events, and entertainment. Local football teams include Nasara FC, Beimoni FC, Northern Lions, Bamas FC, Wumpini FC, Vision FC and Beiyom soccer ambassadors. There is also a football Astro turf field for district sports, and a community center near the hospital and market.
Islam is the largest religion in the area, but there are also Assembly of God and Pentecostal churches, along with a Korean Missionary outreach. Traditional beliefs, including animism and the practice of witch doctors and juju-men, are still part of Dagomba life, with sacrifices and celebrations playing a role in local culture.
A large market takes place every six days, attracting traders from Karaga and surrounding towns to sell goods and services.
Karaga has mobile phone service and is home to the Dizem Bella child and maternal health center, run by Nayina Karim, who was recognized as one of MTN Ghana’s Heroes of Change in 2016.
Karaga sits in the Northern Region of Ghana, serving as a key town in the district and a hub for around-its-region commerce and community life.
