KHQ-TV
KHQ-TV is an NBC-affiliated TV station in Spokane, Washington. It’s the flagship station of the KHQ Television Group, owned by the Cowles Company, which also owns The Spokesman-Review newspaper. The station’s studios are on West Sprague Avenue in downtown Spokane, and its transmitter sits on Krell Hill southeast of the city. Its digital subchannel 6.2 carries SWX Right Now, a 24-hour sports and weather channel.
KHQ-TV began broadcasting on December 20, 1952. It was the first Spokane station to go live and has kept its call letters and ownership since then. It originally carried NBC and ABC, but kept NBC after KREM-TV took ABC in 1954. The station used to own KHQ radio as well; the radio stations were sold in 1985. In 2001, KHQ moved to a new all-digital facility in downtown Spokane. The station is commonly known on air as Q6, and in 2022 its news branding was updated to NonStop Local as part of a group-wide change.
KHQ has aired Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball since 2001, often sharing broadcasts with Root Sports Northwest when games aren’t on ESPN. The station’s analog signal on channel 6 ended in February 2009, while its digital signal stayed on channel 15 (virtual channel 6). KHQ launched SWX, a 24-hour sports channel, in 2009. Full high-definition newscasts began in 2012. The station also helps operate master control for sister NBC stations KNDO and KNDU in the Yakima–Tri-Cities area.
