KGF (film series)
KGF is a Kannada-language action film series created by Prashanth Neel and produced by Hombale Films. The story follows Rocky (Yash), a Mumbai-based mercenary who rises from poverty to become a powerful figure in the Kolar Gold Fields in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The tale is told as an interview where two narrators recount Rocky’s life and rise to power.
Chapter 1 (2018) introduces Rocky and his journey. It became the highest-grossing Kannada film at the time.
Chapter 2 (2022) expands Rocky’s world as he fights for more control. It set several opening-day records, became the first Kannada film to gross ₹500 crore and ₹1,000 crore, and ranked among India’s top films of 2022. Sanjay Dutt plays the main antagonist Adheera, and Raveena Tandon portrays Prime Minister Ramika Sen. Srinidhi Shetty stars as Rocky’s ally and love interest.
Chapter 3 has been teased at the end of Chapter 2 and is in development. By late 2023, the script was reported to be ready, with plans for a global release and a larger, interconnected universe.
Production highlights: Yash grew long hair and a beard for the role. Filming took place in places like Badami and Kolar and faced delays due to issues in the region, weather, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Sanjay Dutt’s schedule and health also affected shooting, and other cast members such as Archana Jois, Ramachandra Raju, Malavika Avinash, and Prakash Raj joined the production over time.
Budget and box office: The two films together had a budget of about ₹180 crore and earned an estimated ₹1,450–₹1,800 crore at the box office.
Overall, KGF is known for its massive scale, dramatic story, and record-breaking success in Indian cinema. The creators hope to broaden its reach globally and expand the series with more characters and connected stories.
